170 MW Hydroelectric Project on Karasu River

MHI has assisted Eric Enerji Uretim in developing and constructing a Hydro Electric Power Plant on Karasu River, Erzincan province, in the mid-eastern part of Turkey to supply electricity to the national grid. MHI acted as owner’s engineer throughout the feasibility, project development, and construction phases and as project manager over the duration of the project. The project was comprised of three different schedules.

The first schedule of the project involved revising and updating previous studies and speculations, including the existing mapping/geological study speculations. Other aspects of the schedule included sourcing for construction materials, developing a comprehensive project schedule, administering geological and geotechnical investigations comprised of geological mapping and seismic analysis, and drilling and subsurface inspections.

Schedule two involved researching and developing viable alternatives for the construction of the Hydro Electric Power Plant on the Karasu River. To determine the appropriate strategy, experts performed a feasibility study on the environmental, hydrological, geological, and financial implications of the alternatives. The alternatives were rated on regulatory policies and constraints, IFI policies and constraints, key environmental and social factors, hydrological and sediment reviews, geotechnical reviews, transmission implications, riparian flow requirements, energy and capacity aspects, technical feasibility and constructability, cost estimates, energy generation and alternative specific implications and constraints. Once the viable alternative has been chosen, schedule three commenced.

Schedule three was the project development and construction phases of the 170 MW Power Plant. The development stage involved estimating energy generation, creating a detailed analysis of the routing and design of transmission lines, preparing cost estimates and schedules, and integrating the environmental, hydrological and geological aspects of the feasibility study.
