Operations and Maintenance Management Services

Phase 1 of the project was to be implemented at a cost of USD 4 billion. Phase 1A is comprised of two double curvature arch dams (Katse, 185m and Muela 55m high), 82 km of transfer and delivery tunnels and a 72 MW underground hydraulic generating station. Phase 1B consists of a 150 m high concrete graced rock fill dam, a diversion weir and 38 km of interconnecting tunnels to the Phase 1A reservoir. The Government of Lesotho added the hydro electric component to the water transfer scheme to offset energy imports from the RSA.
 

This project mobilized an Operations Management Specialist to organize and secure resources and staffing for the operation and maintenance of the hydroelectric generating station associated with this project.

Activities provided by MHI included:

  • Responsibility for establishing within the Authority, the capability to effectively carry out and manage the functions for operations planning, operation and maintenance for the Phase 1A works (Water Transfer and Hydropower) and provided for future operational requirements for the Phase 1B works.
  • Established organization and staffing requirements.
  • Supervised and directed training programs.
  • Established a recruitment and training program including financing arrangements.
  • Carried out and managed the recruitment program.
  • Established the required group and individual training programs.
  • Assumed interim responsibility for all required line management functions.
  • Prepared various tender and contract documents.
  • Established financial reporting systems.
  • Established operating and maintenance procedures, standards and performance measures.
  • Supervised operations and maintenance.
