Capacity Building in Guyana

Management Strengthening Project

As part of Guyana’s Power Utility Upgrade Program, MHI is providing management strengthening services to Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL). Our team of management specialists is delivering leadership and capacity building services to GPL’s executives in Georgetown, Guyana.

“Our role is to support GPL management as they improve the capacity of the utility to provide excellent services to its customers,” says Lance Hinds (Electricity Services, IT Services — MSP).

The overall objective of the 3-year Management Strengthening Program (MSP) is to improve GPL’s performance through effective leadership at the executive level. At the beginning of the project, MHI provided a formal 3-month training program to GPL. As the project continued, MHI’s focus shifted to developing and implementing GPL’s Strategic Business Improvement System.

MHI and GPL are now identifying and implementing critical improvement projects at the corporate level, local improvement projects at lower levels within the organization, performance metrics, and a performance monitoring system.

“GPL and MHI have been working cooperatively over the past 3 years and have formed an effective and honest relationship to handle the issues encountered throughout the project,” says Rob Schumann (Senior Project Manager).

The Strategic Business Improvement System has enhanced several key processes within GPL and has led to the implementation of critical and local improvement projects. These initiatives have contributed to improving system reliability, by a reduction in system outages and system losses. These improvements have positively contributed to increased customer satisfaction.

“Our overall goal is to ensure that GPL becomes a sustainable utility and a highly respected organization within the Caribbean region,” says Kassem Harb (Team Leader and Project and Contract Management Expert).

In the Community

MHI employees have been involved in 3 local community projects aimed at improving the lives of local citizens in Guyana. In 2016, MHI supported Buxton Youth Developers (BYD) through the local Rotary Club. MHI employees raised funds for the BYD, which were used to purchase and construct a swing, slide, and exercise structure for the centre.
