MHI Signs Contract to Support Bolivia–Brazil Power Interconnection

Manitoba Hydro International (MHI) has signed a contract to provide technical consulting services for a planned electrical interconnection between northern Bolivia and Brazil.

The project, formally titled Preparation of Technical Specifications for the Supply of Two 60Hz/50Hz – 138 kV/115 kV Frequency Converters in the Bolivian Amazon North, will support the planned connection of Bolivia’s northern Amazon region, including Cobija and Guayaramerín, with the Brazilian states of Acre and Rondônia.

The two countries operate electrical systems at different frequencies, creating unique technical requirements for interconnection. MHI will provide technical expertise to help evaluate the proposed connection and establish the requirements for the frequency conversion equipment that will enable the systems to operate together.

Supporting a complex interconnection

MHI’s scope includes a technical evaluation of the proposed connection nodes, including a review of the existing Pre-Investment Technical Design Study (EDTP), background information and the initial diagnosis of the electrical system challenges.

The team will also assess frequency converter technologies and perform electrical analyses to support the selection of an appropriate technical solution. The final stage of the assignment will involve preparing detailed technical specifications for the procurement of two 60Hz/50Hz, 138 kV/115 kV frequency converters, along with associated cost analysis, supplier market research and a procurement strategy.

This work draws on MHI’s longstanding expertise in power system planning and interconnection studies. MHI provides utilities and other power-sector clients with engineering services covering system interconnections, including load flow, stability and voltage control studies, as well as technical specifications and procurement support for power system equipment.

The project also builds on MHI’s experience working in Brazil. MHI has previously supported Brazil’s energy-efficiency program through technology transfer and has engaged with Brazilian utilities on distribution technology and innovation.
