Manitoba Hydro International (MHI) has been selected to support the Albanian Power Corporation (KESH) in improving safe access and operational safety systems at the Drin River Cascade hydropower plants. Funded by the World Bank, the assignment will support safety enhancements at the Fierza, Koman, and Vau i Dejës generating stations, which are key components of Albania's electricity system.
The project will help KESH strengthen occupational health and safety practices while supporting the continued safe and reliable operation of some of the country's most important energy infrastructure. The Drin Cascade has a combined installed capacity of approximately 1,350 MW and plays a critical role in power generation and system reliability across Albania.
MHI's work will include reviewing existing safety systems and operational practices, identifying opportunities to reduce risks, and developing practical solutions to improve access to critical infrastructure throughout the hydropower facilities. The assignment will also examine opportunities to enhance monitoring and inspection activities while supporting operational efficiency.
In addition, the project will support the development of occupational health and safety training programs and the preparation of asbestos management strategies in accordance with international best practices and World Bank requirements.
The assignment draws on MHI's extensive experience supporting hydropower operators around the world in dam safety, asset management, operational improvement, risk management, and workforce development. MHI has worked with utilities and power sector organizations across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas to improve the performance, safety, and sustainability of critical electricity infrastructure.
For KESH, the project is expected to contribute to safer working conditions, strengthened operational practices, and improved long-term management of the Drin River Cascade hydropower facilities.
The project brings together expertise from across MHI, alongside Albanian technical specialists, to help KESH enhance the safety and resilience of Albania's most important hydropower assets while supporting the continued delivery of reliable renewable energy for years to come. The involvement of local experts will help ensure that recommendations reflect local operating conditions while supporting effective collaboration and knowledge sharing throughout the assignment.
