Meet Jack Harder, Inspector/Manitoba Hydro Retiree

Jack Harder is a retired Manitoba Hydro employee with over 26 years of service, working mostly in the Apparatus Maintenance Group. Jack has been involved in international assignments with MHI in Tanzania, Timor-Leste, and Liberia.

In 2013, Jack travelled to Monrovia to provide training for mechanical technicians for the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), which is the state owned utility in Liberia. In 2010, Jack worked as a generation manager with the LEC, where he trained staff on the operation, maintenance, and management of a diesel generation station.

In 2006, Jack was a plant power manager for an MHI project with the Artumas Group Inc. in Mtwara, Tanzania. This project involved the building and commissioning of an 18 MW natural gas-fired reciprocating engine power plant. In addition, Jack provided training for staff at the power station during his four years on the project.

“Working abroad has given me a better understanding of my job including budgeting, operations, and management,” said Jack. “More importantly, it made me become more flexible to accommodate others and to appreciate the things I took for granted in Canada.”

Jack says he has enjoyed working hard, being appreciated for his efforts, and getting to explore different cultures while on his international assignments.

“Working with MHI has taught me that regardless of race, religion, or culture, people can achieve a common goal when they all work together,” said Jack.
